Best Graphic Novels and Graphic Nonfiction from Brainpickings.org

Brainpickings.org lists its picks for best graphic novels and graphic nonfiction of 2012. Some of the titles they reviewed include

  • Graphic Canon Volume II
  • Building Stories
  • The Secret History of Coffee and Coca Cola
  • The Carter Family.

I have to say that I am feeling a little skeptical about these choices because of the standard set by Alison Bechdel with her graphic memoir, Fun Home, but I’m willing to give a couple of the listings a chance. Luckily, Brainpickings sampled some of the pages from these books so we can get a feeling for the overall impact of the drawings. I’m interested in reading Gonzo: A Graphic Biography of Hunter S. Thompson, by Will Bingley and Journalism by Joe Sacco.

As a nonfiction writer and teacher of visual narrative, I’m also interested in checking out some of the entries on the 10 Masterpieces of Graphic Nonfiction list. This “best list” is an older rendition from 2011. I admit that I kind of want a copy of The Elements of Style, Illustrated.
